figure abstraction and nonobjective shape

The goal of this assignment was to make an abstract figure with closed form and distort the figure to create a nonobjective shape with open form. The assignment required distorting the figure four times, resulting in a total of five designs.

I started the project by drawing an abstract human figure with six “pieces”: a head, torso, two arms, and two legs. I took a photo of my drawing and used the drawing as a template to create a vector in Illustrator. After tracing the original figure, I distorted the figure more to design four other compositions, creating a sequence.

To complete the project in Illustrator I used the pen tool direct selection tool the most. I used the pen tool to trace the template of the original image and add or remove anchors where needed. With the direct selection tool, I adjust the paths, anchors, and handles to distort the abstract figure.
